They are native to cold climates, live on rocky mountain sides, and are often referred to as the "whistling hare" due to their high-pitched alarm call when diving into their burrows. Recently there was an attempt to put them on the endangered species list, but not all Pika colonies were declining, so for now they remain on a "watch" list.
